Parent section: 90-Day Execution Timelines and Attainable Milestones

While Fortran was rarely used for commercial arcade or action games, it played an important role in early computer gaming history on mainframes and minicomputers (e.g., Don Woods’ FORTRAN IV expansion of Colossal Cave Adventure, tactical wargames, orbital space simulators, and economic strategy engines)6.
Within 90 days, a developer learning Fortran (whether standard FORTRAN 77 via compilers like OpenWatcom/MS-FORTRAN or Modern Fortran restricted to vintage paradigms) can master:

  • Large multidimensional array calculations with strict anti-aliasing optimizations, allowing simulated physical environments to run fast3.
  • Complex procedural generation algorithms (e.g., planetary generation, star system modeling, fluid-like cellular terrain) expressed directly as mathematical operations3.
  • Modular separation of game logic, deterministic state machines, and numerical simulation loops6.

However, Fortran inherently lacks built-in primitives to communicate directly with hardware display buffers, palette registers, or sound cards12. A pure Fortran game must either run as an ASCII/text-mode experience, or rely on assembly subroutines and external libraries to render frames to the screen1.

ID Severity Evidence Status Location Problem
D02-C1 critical KNOW open L50, L84, L173 Claim: The document says that Fortran wins because of “anti-aliasing optimizations”, “array syntax” and an “auto-vectorizing execution model”.. Problem: FORTRAN 77 has no array syntax. Whole-array expressions and slices came in Fortran 90. 8086 to 486 CPUs have no SIMD, thus the compiler has nothing to auto-vectorize. MMX came in 1997, and x87 is scalar. The primary Fortran advantages in the document do not exist on its own target.
D02-M5 major VERIFY verify L54, L62, L106, L165 Claim: The document says that Fortran has “zero native support” for display and input, and that a “pure Fortran game must be ASCII”.. Problem: This is too strong. Compilers from vendors of that time shipped graphics libraries that Fortran can call. An example is the graphics library of Microsoft FORTRAN 5.x. A call to a vendor or assembly library was normal practice. The Assembly path also depends on BIOS calls.
